Research projects under the small grant program are designed to benefit California electricity consumers through research that establishes the feasibility of advanced and innovative energy concepts in the six areas: (1) Industrial/Agriculture/Water End-Use Efficiency, (2) Building End-Use Efficiency, (3) Environmentally Preferred Advanced Generation, (4) Renewable Generation, (5) Energy-Related Environmental Research, and (6) Energy Systems Integration. National Science Foundation. Cultural Anthropology. This program promotes basic scientific research on the causes and consequences of human social and cultural variation. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)/National Institutes of Health (NIH). Structural Interventions, Alcohol Use, and Risk of HIV/AIDS. The NIAAA and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) are requesting research on the effectiveness of structural interventions that reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission by changing the environment of alcohol use. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). Grants for Violence-Related Injury Prevention Research: Youth Violence, Suicidal Behavior, Child Maltreatment, Intimate Partner Violence, and Sexual Violence. The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help expand and advance the understanding of violence, its causes, and prevention strategies in the following areas: Dissemination Research, Intervention Evaluation Research, Protective Factors Research, and Influence of the Media and Parental Behavior on Violence Prevention. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Evaluation of Community-Based Approaches to Increasing Seat Belt Use Among Adolescent Drivers and their Passengers. The purpose of this announcement is to implement and evaluate a multi-component community-based intervention to increase seat belt use among adolescent drivers and their passengers. Amount: $300,000. McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience. McKnight Scholar Award. The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Foundation. Projects of Special Merit. The goal of the VisiBuilding program is to develop knowledge-deriving architectures for sensing people and objects in buildings. The program will address propagation and backscatter off urban structures, develop operational concepts for sensor position and utilization, and derive model-driven algorithms that best match hypothesized structural models with the actual sensed data. Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government. Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting. The Prize for Investigative Reporting has honored pioneering work by teams of journalists from across the country. It honors the journalist or journalists whose investigative reporting in a story or series of related stories best promotes more effective and ethical conduct of government, the making of public policy, or the practice of politics. Amount: $25,000.

National Science Foundation (NSF). Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS). Participating directorates of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) plan to support innovative interdisciplinary research in computational neuroscience. Alzheimer's Association. Everyday Technologies for Alzheimer Care (ETAC) Research Grants. ETAC is interested in groundbreaking studies on emerging technologies as well as their clinical and social implications. Mobile computing, high bandwidth sensing, robotics, imaging, face recognition, natural language processing, statistical modeling and a host of other technology advances allow unprecedented opportunities to study disease progression and therapeutic strategies in the contexts of everyday life. ETAC supports research that integrates such emerging technology capabilities with leading directions in behavioral science and biomedical research. Required LOI Deadline: December 01, 2005. The purpose of the Partnership to Promote Adolescent Health in States (PPAHS) Cooperative Agreement Program is to develop improved approaches for delivering adolescent public health programs at the state level. International Society for Optical Engineering, SPIE Awards Program. Grants for Educational and Research Institutions. The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) grants are available to educational and research institutions. Suggested uses of SPIE grant awards include: promotion of collaboration between SPIE student chapters and leveraging of offsite scientific facilities; sending students to SPIE-sponsored events; developing new courses; efforts at general public education (e.g., public workshops); books and library subscriptions; and on occasion, purchase of supplemental teaching tools or equipment. National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF/DOE Partnership in Basic Plasma Science and Engineering. The goal of this three year (FY06-FY08) program initiative is to enhance plasma research and education in this broad, multidisciplinary field by coordinating efforts and combining resources of the two agencies. The initiative will address fundamental issues in plasma science and engineering that can have impact in other areas or disciplines in which improved basic understanding of the plasma state is needed. National Science Foundation (NSF), Directorate for Education and Human Resources. Research on Gender in Science and Engineering FY 2006 (GSE). Typical projects will contribute to the knowledge base addressing gender-related differences in learning and in the educational experiences that affect student interest, performance, and choice of careers; and how pedagogical approaches and teaching styles, curriculum, student services, and institutional culture contribute to causing or closing gender gaps that persist in certain fields. The Cluster for Systematic Biology and Biodiversity Inventories within the Division of Environmental Biology encourages the submission of proposals aimed at synthesizing available and new species-level taxonomic information in the context of providing revisionary treatments and predictive classifications for particular groups of organisms. National Science Foundation (NSF). Science of Design (SoD), Software-Intensive Systems. The Science of Design (SoD) Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) is soliciting proposals for projects that will bring creative, scientific advances to design as it pertains to computer-based artifacts, especially software-intensive systems. The objective of the program is to bring new paradigms, concepts, approaches, models, and theories into the development of a strong intellectual foundation for software design. SoD solicits proposals in three categories: Team Projects (TEAM), Community Building Activities (CBA), and Highly Creative Exploratory Research (HCER). Upper Amount: $640,000.

Pfizer, Inc. Scholars Grants in Public Health. The Pfizer Faculty Scholar Awards in Public Health are nationally competitive career development awards intended to support the development and career track of junior faculty in public health interested in pursuing community-based public health practice research. These awards are also intended to foster collaborative partnerships between accredited schools of public health and state and local departments of public health. Upper Amount: $130,000. The foundation's general purpose is to carry on the vision of its founder, Samuel Rubin, whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of peace and justice and the search for an equitable reallocation of the world's resources, achieved through the fullest implementation of social, economic, political, civil, and cultural rights for all the world's people. US Department of Defense (DOD), The Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Medical Science and Technology Chemical and Biological Defense Transformational Medical Technologies Initiative. This initiative seeks to develop medical counter-measures to emerging threats, genetically engineered and nontraditional toxins, virulence factors and microorganisms as biological warfare threat agents. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Innovations Grants for State/Local/Tribal Innovative Approaches to Reducing Air Pollution. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). National Programs to Build the Capacity for Societal Institutions that Influence Youth Behavior. The purpose of the program announcement is to fund national non-governmental organizations to provide capacity building assistance that supports a national program to prevent HIV infections, other STDs, and unintended pregnancies; reduce tobacco use; reduce the burden of asthma; prevent chronic diseases; promote coordinated school health programs; and promote school mental health services. National Science Foundation. Biological Databases and Informatics. The mission of the Biological Databases and Informatics (BD&I) program is to encourage new approaches to the management, analysis, and dissemination of biological knowledge that will enable both the scientific community and the broader public to gain maximum benefit and utility.

National Science Foundation. Long Term Research in Environmental Biology. Research questions include, but are not limited to, populations or predator-prey systems that oscillate over decades, communities of organisms that have extended life spans and long turnover times, pools of materials such as nutrients in soils that turn over at intermediate to longer time scales, external forcing functions such as climatic cycles that operate over long return intervals, and abiotic conditions such as sea-level rise or global warming that are changing slowly but in a particular direction.

US Department of Defense (DOD), US Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM). Active/Passive Aircraft Survivability. The program objective is to develop, integrate, and demonstrate a low-cost aircraft self-protection suite that is highly effective in detecting, disrupting, and defeating small arms, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and man portable air defense systems (MANPADS) threats, typical of non-linear battlefield environments. To accelerate the discovery and study of the world’s biodiversity, proposals are invited from teams of investigators to conduct a worldwide, species-level systematic inventory of a major group of organisms. Newberry Library, Long-Term Fellowships. Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women. This award is designed for a woman at an early stage of her academic career whose work gives clear promise of scholarly productivity and who would benefit significantly from six months of research, writing, and participation in the intellectual life of the library. The applicant's topic should be related to the Newberry's collections; preference will be given to proposals particularly concerned with the study of women. Upper Amount: $15,000.

US Department of Justice (DOJ), National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Sexual Violence from Adolescence to Late Adulthood: Research, Evaluation, and the Criminal Justice Response. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking proposals for research on sexual violence, with the purpose of increasing womens' safety by informing and improving policy and practice in the criminal justice system. Proposed research may address intra-family, stranger, or acquaintance sexual violence against women and/or adolescent girls. Deadline: January 10, 2006.

US Department of Justice (DOJ), National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Transnational Crime. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking proposals to conduct research on transnational crime, specifically the following focus areas: trafficking of human beings (including international child abduction), organized crime and corruption, intellectual property theft, Internet and related fraud, smuggling of natural resources and antiquities, drug trafficking, money laundering, and justice system issues that need to be examined to more effectively address transnational crimes. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (ECOHAB) Program. The EPA, NASA, NOAA, and Office of Naval Research (ONR), are soliciting proposals for the interagency Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (ECOHAB) program. This program provides support for research on algal species whose populations may cause or result in deleterious effects on ecosystems and human health. Studies of the causes of such blooms, their detection, effects, mitigation, and control in U.S. coastal waters (including estuaries and Great Lakes) are sought. Deadline: January 10, 2006.

National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Interdisciplinary Partnerships in Environmental Health Sciences. The objective of this initiative is to foster scientific collaboration between clinical and basic investigators to accelerate the application of basic research results into the clinical setting to improve human health in those areas where environmental factors are known or expected to influence the development or progression of human disease. National Science Foundation (NSF), Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). Computer Systems Research (CSR). The Computer Systems Research (CSR) program supports innovative research and education projects that have the potential to lead to significant improvements in existing computer systems by increasing our fundamental understanding of such systems; produce systems software that is qualitatively and quantitatively more reliable and more efficient; or, to produce innovative curricula or educational materials that better prepare the next generation of computing professionals. US Department of Energy (DOE). Chemicals Industry of the Future. DOE invites applications for its Industrial Technology Program. This program, in part, supports cost-shared R&D and demonstration projects that will lead to commercial technology with the potential for substantial reduction in energy consumption by the U.S. Chemical Industry.

National Institutes of Health (NIH). Assay Development for High Throughput Molecular Screening. The goal of this request for applications is to initiate a continuously evolving stream of scientifically and technologically outstanding assays that can be miniaturized, automated, and further used for screening small molecules within the Molecular Libraries Screening Centers Network. It is open to all areas of biological and biomedical research, with the goal of disseminating information about small molecule-target interactions, and enabling the design of pharmacological tools to explore cellular and physiological function. National Institutes of Health. Proteomic Studies of Platelet Functions. The purpose of this RFA is to stimulate proteomic studies on platelets and apply the technology to study platelets from a patient group that may have defective platelet function. We anticipate that the results of these studies will generate proteomic approaches and provide novel markers of platelet function. LOI Deadline: December 12, 2005.

National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB). Cluster for Biomolecular Systems. Research supported by this cluster includes development of cutting-edge technologies integrating theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches to the study of biological molecules and their functional complexes; mechanistic studies of the regulation and catalysis of enzymes and RNA, and higher-order characterization of the biochemical processes by which all organisms acquire, transform, and utilize energy from substrates. The Genes and Genome Systems Cluster supports studies on genomes and genetic mechanisms in all organisms, whether prokaryote, eukaryote, phage, or virus. US Department of Defense (DOD), Department of the Army. Autonomous Mine Detection Sensors (AMDS) Technology Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). The goal is to evaluate and demonstrate approaches for autonomous mine detection of anti-personnel (AP) and anti-tank (AT) mines from a small robotic platform. Technology approaches are sought that can detect AP and AT mines at a minimum distance of 10 meters in front of the detection sensor. Deadline: January 12, 2006.

The purpose of this initiative is to enhance the newborn screening system by supporting public health information system infrastructure to facilitate system components such as follow-up, tracking, evaluation, and education. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Utilizing Family Traditions and Oral History for Health Promotion. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to facilitate the public's learning process and knowledge of the genetic contribution to health and disease, the public's genetic "literacy" through educational tool development and dissemination of educational tools. Iowa Biotechnology Byproducts Consortium (BBC). Competitive Grant Program and RFP. Every year, the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), invites Iowa State University to submit a continuation application for the non-competitive line-item Special Research Grant entitled “Iowa Biotechnology Consortium” (BBC). The Iowa BBC is soliciting preproposals from researchers at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the City of Cedar Rapids for a proposal to be submitted to the USDA. Microsoft. Digital Inclusion Through Mobile and Wireless Technologies Research Funding Initiative.
