Research Units

Iowa State is home to a distinctive research enterprise that specializes in areas of high priority for the university and the State of Iowa, as well as on the grand challenges facing our nation and the global community.

Iowa State's land-grant mission has led to a tradition of research excellence in agriculture, the sciences, engineering, and veterinary medicine. Integral to departmental research for over 120 years has been the work of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. Iowa State is the only university in the nation to have a U.S. Department of Energy facility physically located on its campus. For over 60 years, the Ames Laboratory has been central to Iowa State's research enterprise.

Today, nearly 100 centers and institutes round out Iowa State's research organization. Researchers across these collective units routinely engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and technology commercialization, perpetuating a culture that has been key to Iowa State's long record of success in research and in moving ideas and inventions from the laboratory to the marketplace.
