Iowa State named NSF Innovation Corps site
Iowa State University has been selected as one of the newest National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) sites. I-Corps sites act as a training ground for faculty, postdoctoral and graduate students to transition their ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace.
Information about I-Corps and the microgrants available for accepted cohort members will be available at these upcoming informational sessions:
  • Monday, Sept. 11, 9 - 10 a.m., Gallery, Memorial Union
  • Tuesday, Sept. 12, 9 - 10 a.m., Pioneer Room, Memorial Union
Faculty, staff, post-docs, and graduate students interested in learning about the I-Corps program are encouraged to attend. Topics will include an overview of the I-Corps program, application process and timeline, curriculum overview, and benefits of participation, including additional funding and program opportunities.
Training & Development

Get your NIH and NSF responsible conduct of research training
Thursday and Friday, Sept. 7-8, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Gold Room, Memorial Union
Faculty, staff, and postdocs who receive funding through NSF or certain NIH grants can participate in a two-day OVPR "boot camp" that will satisfy NIH and NSF requirements for training in the Responsible Conduct of Research. Register here.
Use campus resources to find funding opportunities

Bring your laptops to this hands-on Grants Hub training where you will learn how to strategically use websites and proprietary databases to identify and connect with funding opportunities and to set up saved searches, shared opportunities, and receive funding alert emails. Human research basics: Does this project need IRB oversight?

This is the first of a four-part series that looks more closely at the components of the Institutional Review Board submission process. In this session you will learn how to determine whether IRB oversight is required. Information about the levels of IRB review will also be shared.

Learn the ins and outs of a request for proposal (RFP)

Wednesday, Sept. 20, 3 - 4:30 p.m., Gold Room, Memorial Union

In this session you will learn the fundamentals of reading and interpreting agency guidelines. The discussion will include information commonly found in sponsor guidelines and tips and tricks to avoid common mistakes. Register for either session here.

How to work with the DOD's Army Research Lab
Thursday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m. - noon, 301 Spedding
Army Research Lab representatives will provide an overview on partnering with them to apply for Department of Defense projects. Faculty with experience in this process will be on hand to provide an overview of their experiences and lessons learned. Register here.

Leveraging NSF programs for big data research

Dr. Chaitanya Baru, senior advisor for data science, CISE directorate, will discuss agency priorities and initiatives, and answer your questions about funding programs related to data science and data-driven discovery. Register here.

Lessons in 'data carpentry' to boost your research using data
Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 12-13, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., 368A Heady Hall
This hands-on workshop will cover basic research computing concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants from any discipline are encouraged to attend. Learn more and register here.

All (digital agriculture) hands on deck

Iowa State is hosting an "all-hands meeting" for the Midwest Big Data Hub spoke project "Digital Agriculture — Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Plant Sciences and Education." Attendees will discuss about the partnerships and resources needed to address the challenges in collecting, managing, serving, mining, and analyzing rapidly growing and increasingly complex data and information collections. Funding Opportunities

NSF Rapid Response Research (RAPID) funding due to Harvey
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, there will likely be opportunities for funding through NSF's Grants for Rapid Response Research (RAPID). A RAPID proposal is used when there is a severe urgency with regard to availability of, or access to, data, facilities, or specialized equipment, including quick-response research on natural or anthropogenic disasters. PIs must contact the NSF program officer(s) whose expertise is most relevant to the proposal topic before submitting a RAPID proposal.

Three new members selected for Biotech Council
Iowa State's Biotechnology Council has three new members. The council makes recommendations to the Office of Biotechnology on program activities supporting biotechnology research, education, and outreach.

'Plant Phenomics Phridays' seminar series a success
The "Plant Phenomics Phridays" summer seminar series gave an overview of the challenges and opportunities in the plant sciences that are being addressed using novel approaches from diverse disciplines. In-person and virtual registrations totaled 440. All of the presentations were recorded.
